у меня такое было под дебом лечилось доустановкой git-* пакета
в бсд есть 2 порта devel/git и misc/git ???
попробовал под линухом без пути куда создает в текущем каталоге
так

это не тот гит!
http://www.gnu.org/software/gnuit/ (GNU Interactive Tools) - это чем Лиссяра пытался клонировать
надо с /usr/ports/devel/ собирать
